Largest Shipment to Port of Caddo-Bossier to Begin Trek to Texas State Line

Shreveport, La. – Beginning at 9am on Friday morning, the largest shipment ever received at the Port of Caddo-Bossier will begin its trek to the Texas State line.  The piece of cargo, which is called a “Cold Box”, began its journey in Asia and will be delivered to its final destination in Longview, Texas.

Department of Transportation and Port leaders are calling the cargo a “super load” because of its size.  A convoy consisting of one truck pulling and one truck pushing will be move the 611,000-pound load. Fully assembled, the convoy will span more than 275 feet and will only average 1 mile an hour for its 3-day trip from the Port of Caddo-Bossier to the Texas State line.  A team of utility crews and police officers will work with the convoy to insure there are no transportation issues.  The cold box is expected to arrive at the Texas State Line at 2pm on Sunday, that’s where Texas crews will begin the escort.

The Port of Caddo-Bossier was able to accept this item because of the uniqueness of the Slack Water Harbor Dock which removes the shipment from the currents within the Red River. Without this dock, the “Cold Box” would have been delivered to a port along the Gulf of Mexico and then trucked to Longview.  That costly journey would have taken at least a month. This shipment is an example of how rail, river and road investments at the Port of Caddo-Bossier are having a big impact on its operations.

The 2,300 acre Port of Caddo-Bossier is located at the head of navigation on the Red River Waterway in Northwest Louisiana. An inland multi-modal transportation and distribution center, The Port works hand in hand with the port system of Louisiana to successfully link customers throughout the Ark-La-Tex region to domestic and international markets via the Mississippi River, the nation's largest river system, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
